11. The Birches Alzheimer’s Day Centre, Ireland

Where: Louth, Republic of Ireland

Who is involved: The Birches is partially funded by the Department of Health, supported by the Health and Safety Executive North East branch (HSENE) and The North Louth Branch Dundalk fundraises the balance. There is a Management Committee responsible for the day-to-day management of the Day Centre. All branch members work in a totally voluntary capacity.

Nature of activity: Six day services for people with dementia, and a weekly outreach day service in a rural coastal community.  It provides a family support group, training to family carers, and is organising an advocacy programme for family members.  It is described as ‘a mixed model of care and encompasses all the current models medical/social/and rights model of care’. It is involved with a local age friendly forum which is part of the World Health Organisation’s age friendly city programme to include dementia-friendly aspects to the area plan. It plans to organise monthly dementia-friendly events to raise dementia awareness, interact with the older people’s forums to engage with local businesses and government agencies about becoming dementia-friendly, reminding everyone that the person with dementia is part of the community and together with their family should have their rights respected.
